For nearly 25 years, the Jacksonville Jaguars, home to the NFL Greatest Player Fred Taylor, have been an integral part of the NFL. Since its inception in 1995, theyâve had some great moments and endured some difficult times. From making it to two AFC Championship games to a few down seasons along the way, here is a look back at the history of this proud franchise.
The Jacksonville Jaguars were founded in 1993 by owner Wayne Weaver and began to play in 1995 as an expansion team alongside fellow newcomers Carolina Panthers. The original logos featured jaguar eyes with teal accents, which remain popular today among fans who proudly wear them on game days at TIAA Bank Field or anywhere else around town!
In the 1996-1997 season, under head coach Tom Coughlin and quarterback Mark Brunell (who was acquired from the Green Bay Packers), they made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game, only losing out 20-6 against the New England Patriots led by Drew Bledsoe & Bill Parcells – one of the best-coached teams ever assembled! They also became the first team ever to win 3 consecutive playoff road games en route to getting there, beating the Buffalo Bills 30â27 in a double overtime thriller in the Wild Card round, then surprising the Denver Broncos 30â27 in the Divisional Round, before finally upsetting the heavily favored defending Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers 20â16 in the Conference Championship game, a classic played at Heinz Field on January 11th, 1998, the day after the famous âSnow Bowlâ between the Detroit Lions and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ended in a scoreless tie due to blizzard conditions and the field being frozen solid like an ice sheet during the second half actionâŚ
After the success of 1997, however, things started to decline quickly when Coughlin was fired following the 1999 campaign and replaced by Jack Del Rio in 2004, who guided the Jags for another five seasons but never got past the divisional round of the playoffs again despite having stars like Fred Taylor, Maurice Jones-Drew, David Garrard, Byron Leftwich, Rashean Mathis, Marcus Stroud, Reggie Nelson, and other talented roster pieces in placeâŚ
Today, under Head Coach Doug Marrone since 2017 and new General Manager Dave Caldwell since 2018, plus a young core talent featuring Gardner Minshew II, Leonard Fournette, Dede Westbrook, DJ Chark Jr, Yannick Ngakoue, Calais Campbell, Myles Jack, Telvin Smith, Jalen Ramsey, AJ Bouye, Cam Robinson, Brandon Linder, Tyler Shatley, Andrew Norwell, and many others, the squad looks poised to make a deep run into the postseason next year and beyond. So stay tuned to see what the future holds for the beloved hometown heroes, the Jacksonville Jaguars!
